About John
Modest beginnings…
John’s father was the local milkman; his mother, a full-time homemaker.
Growing up on a farm, he learned the value of hard work, thriftiness and never
giving up. John knows how to stand and fight for what he believes.
Early career…
After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1973, and working,
traveling and performing at Lincoln Center in New York City and the Kennedy
Center in Washington, D.C., John found his home in Norfolk. Before becoming
an Attorney in 1995, John was a very successful writer/performer and
professional humorist for more than 20 years.
Justice for all...
John never attended law school. He is one of a small group who passed the bar
exam on the first try after completing Virginia’s Law Reader Program. John has
been practicing court appointed family and criminal law, and civil litigation, for 14
years. As your Commonwealth’s Attorney, he will work diligently to insure justice
for all Norfolk citizens.
Community…
John and his wife, Aileen, live in Willoughby. He is an active member of the
Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bar Associations.
John has served on the Rotary Club of Norfolk’s Board of Directors, and he is a
Past President of both the Kiwanis Club of Ocean View Beach and the Citizens
Coalition for Good Government. He is also a member in good standing of the
Criminal Law Section of the Virginia State Bar and the Friends of the Norfolk
Juvenile Court. John and Aileen attend Third Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.
